Fencing Gear & Equipment

It often surprises people to know that fencing is an extremely safe sport, largely due to the various protective gear required for participation in the sport—you're more likely to accidentally roll your ankle than sustain an injury from your opponent's weapon.

In addition to the mask, glove, and white jacket, fencers wear:

  • an underarm protector or "plastron" on their weapon-hand side

  • knee-length pants, "knickers"

  • long, padded socks

  • Young children and participants in Women's events must wear a plastic chest protector.

The Renard Fencing Academy proudly offers gear and equipment for students to borrow as they begin their fencing journey. However, once a fencer decides to commit to the sport, typically after they enter the Foil or Sabre Program, we recommend that they have personal equipment. Our coaches are happy to discuss and guide you through the process of gear and equipment purchasing.

Navigating Vendors & Equipment Purchases

If you research fencing gear and equipment, you'll find there are many vendors out there, various brands, and a range of price points for each type of product. Keep in mind that, as long as it arrives in good condition,

new gear purchased from a proper vendor should be safe to use (if anything arrives broken or is the wrong size, you can usually return and exchange your purchase). In addition to vendors, you may find pre-owned gear available on eBay or Facebook Marketplace for a significantly lower price (just beware of scams and sub-standard gear).

We highly encourage our fencers and their families to chat with a coach before buying anything, mainly due to sizing considerations and weapon selection (there are many to choose from). If nothing else, please remember to buy either a "foil" or "sabre":

  • Mask

    • Foil masks have a metallic/'silver' bib, but black mesh over the face

    • Sabre masks are completely metallic/'silver'

  • Lamé ("la-may")

    • Foil lamés look like metallic vests

    • Sabre lamés look like a metallic jacket with full-length sleeves

  • Glove

    • Foil gloves do not have a metallic cuff

    • Sabre gloves have a metallic cuff and say "800N"
